BIOGRAFIE
Pearl Brunings is een abstracte schilder, grafisch ontwerper en filmactrice die in Paramaribo woont en haar werk signeert met de alias Hex. Pearl begon haar pad als beeldend kunstenaar op 31-jarige leeftijd, toen ze vier jaar lang leerde schilderen van twee gerenommeerde Surinaamse kunstenaars. Tijdens het leren maakte zij snel naam door deel te nemen aan groepstentoonstellingen en daarmee aandacht te trekken van de lokale media.
Pearl, die is opgegroeid in Paramaribo waar ‘iedereen iedereen kent’, zet vraagtekens bij sommige van de vooroordelen en overtuigingen die deel uitmaken van het leven in een kleine samenleving. Haar werk komt voort uit haar drang zich uit sommige patronen en verwachtingen los te breken. Dit weerspiegelt zich in de levendige kleuren, vrije penseelstreken en vele tools die zij gebruikt.
Na een periode van tien jaar waarin de focus voornamelijk lag op haar grafische ontwerpstudio en het opvoeden van haar kinderen, keerde Pearl op 51-jarige leeftijd naar het schilderen terug en trok opnieuw snel publieke aandacht. In 2021 was haar werk te zien in het Frans-Guyanese kunsttijdschrift Mitaraka, en in 2022 toonden de twee grootste conferenties die door de regering van Suriname werden georganiseerd haar werk tezamen met dat van een select aantal andere kunstenaars.
Met haar andere levensdoelen grotendeels vervuld, en haar onsterfelijke passie voor schilderen, is Pearl Brunings nu hier om te blijven.
BIOGRAPHY
Pearl Brunings is an abstract painter, graphic designer and screen actress living in Paramaribo, Suriname who signs her work with the alias Hex. Pearl started her path as a visual artist at the age of 31, when she embarked on a four-year journey of learning to paint from two of Suriname’s most renowned visual artists. While learning, she quickly made a name for herself, participating in group exhibits and grabbing the attention of local newspapers and television.
Having grown up in a town where “everybody knows everybody”, Pearl questions the prejudices and beliefs that come with living in small societies. The urge to break free, liberate her own mind and maybe the minds of others informs her work. She reflects these themes in vibrant colors, free brushstrokes and the many tools she uses while she works.
At 51, after a ten-year period of focusing on her graphic design studio and bringing up her children, Pearl returned to painting and once again quickly drew the attention of the public eye. In 2021, she was featured in the French-Guianese Mitaraka art magazine, and in 2022, the two largest conferences hosted by the government of Suriname showcased her work among a select few other artists.
With her other life goals mostly fulfilled, and her undying passion for painting, this time around, Pearl Brunings is here to stay.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My attraction to acrylic paint stems from its vibrant nature. I am not one for control, so I collaborate with the paint – ask it to move, be consistent, and reveal its textures. I agree to do the same, all while respecting the need for darkness in order to bring out the light.
My tools of the trade are many: brushes, spray cans, markers, droppers, palette knives, scrapers and trowels. Dimensionality and ferocity are my calling cards, strewn across the canvas. Size doesn’t matter, but I enjoy working on large canvas. The feeling of movement can be achieved on smaller canvases, but I find larger surfaces liberating.
From childhood to womanhood, drawing kept me centered until I embarked on a painting journey at the age of 30. For four years, I took painting classes in my hometown of Paramaribo, Suriname from two well-respected local artists. However, I had no idea it was my true calling until, at age 51, I was overwhelmed with an undeniable urge to pick up a brush after a decades-long hiatus. In the present day, my work is informed by the staunch echoes of my teachers and all of the experiences that have resurrected the artist within.
